Several Bitcoin miners are diversifying their operations to support artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in a bid to remain profitable.

Decline in Mining Revenue

Data from Bitinfocharts shows that the average Bitcoin transaction fee on April 19, the day of the halving, surged to $127 but later dropped to around $4. This led to a decrease in both fees and mining revenue. For example, Bitfarms reported a 42% revenue drop in May. In April, the company held 263 Bitcoins ($18.1 million), but only 156 Bitcoins ($10.7 million) in May.

Expansion Into AI Data Centers

Some Bitcoin miners have started making deals with AI companies to provide infrastructure and boost their revenue. Hut 8 Corp. launched an AI vertical under a GPU-as-a-service model, purchasing 1,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs last October.

Ross Gan from Bitdeer Technologies Group shared that Bitdeer has also integrated high-performance computing into its core offerings, completing the deployment of a full NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD with H100 systems in less than four months.

Core Scientific’s 12-Year AI Deal

Core Scientific, a former bankrupt Bitcoin miner, recently announced a 12-year deal with cloud provider CoreWeave to provide infrastructure for AI applications. The project is expected to generate over $3.5 billion in revenue during the initial 12-year term, with estimated average annual revenues of around $290 million.

Challenges and Requirements for AI Data Centers

Despite the potential for new revenue streams, not all Bitcoin miners will successfully adapt to AI data centers. The infrastructure and capital requirements for AI workloads are significantly higher than for mining.

Jamie McAvity from Cormint Data Systems stated that AI data centers are entirely different from crypto mining facilities and require substantial initial investments and different infrastructure.

Adapting to AI data centers provides Bitcoin miners with new revenue opportunities but also requires significant investments and specific infrastructure. The success of these efforts depends on the miners’ ability to adapt to the new demands of AI technologies.
