As new regulations for digital assets come into effect in June, ZA Bank from Hong Kong, a part of the Chinese company ZhongAn Online P&C Insurance, is exploring opportunities to expand its services with virtual assets.

Hong Kong is already striving to establish itself as a global center for cryptocurrencies, having introduced a new regulatory framework for crypto exchanges last year. According to this framework, all exchanges in the city were required to submit license applications by February 2024, with 24 companies currently competing for these licenses.

Approval from the main financial regulator in Hong Kong, the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), is particularly significant due to its reputation as a prestigious regulatory body.

Ronald Yu Man-chung, the CEO of ZA Bank, shared in an interview with SCMP that the bank is actively preparing to offer virtual asset trading services for retail investors. However, specific details about these services will be announced after the completion of the preparation.

Although ZA Bank did not respond to Cryptonews’ request for comment, the importance of its plans to expand services with virtual assets is evident.

This move by the bank comes at a time when Hong Kong is tightening its control over illegal virtual asset exchanges and warning crypto investors to be cautious. The deadline for submitting license applications is until February 29, and illegal exchanges must cease operations by the end of May.

Following these stringent measures, Hong Kong demonstrates that it not only aims to be a strictly regulated center for cryptocurrencies but also strives to take a leading position in the world of financial technologies.
